Large Company

Bender Shipbuilding & Repair Co., Inc.

Bender Shipbuilding has expended much time and effort working as a member of the Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the field of integrating an Environmental Management System (EMS) and “Lean Manufacturing.” Bender specifically focused on reducing smoke and gas emissions by monitoring weld sizes and the economic costs and environmental effects of over-welding and rework.

Large Company

Volkert Environmental Group, Inc.

Volkert & Associates led an interdisciplinary team in the preparation of an EIS for the Choctaw Point Terminal project.  The EIS process produced a comprehensive wetland mitigation plan that achieved the goal of no-net-loss of wetlands, incorporation of measures to control storm water runoff and protect water quality, the discovery and preservation of an historic Civil War fortification – Fort Albert Sidney Johnston, and a commitment by the ASPA to provide public access to the Mobile Bay at Arlington Cove.

 Medium Company

Akzo Nobel Functional Chemicals, LLC

Akzo Nobel has taken the additional step to improve environmental progress through certification of its Responsible Care (RC) Program.  This is in addition to the ISO 14001 certification they have held since 1996.  By becoming RC 14001 certified, the environmental progress of the company is now verified by the auditing of a third part. Akzo Nobel is responsible for the protection and handling of chemicals in its own plant, and by its customers, transporters, and the general public, and follows the advice of its Citizen’s Advisory Panel in Axis, Alabama.

 Medium Company

Hand Arendall, LLC

The members of the Real Estate, Land Use and Timber Practice Group of the law firm Hand Arendall, LLC encourage conservation of natural resources and good stewardship by learning as well as teaching leaders, individuals, and visitors along the Gulf Coast about our natural resources.  Additionally, the Practice Group participates as members, board members and officers of numerous conservation and environmental organizations.  Members of the Practice Group are directly involved in task forces focusing on conservation and land use planning issues, volunteer efforts that promote conservation education, watershed management practices, and best management practices in everyday activities.

 Medium Company

Hargrove & Associates, Inc.

Hargrove & Associates chose to renovate an existing building near downtown for its expansion.  The project utilized less new construction materials, provided a net increase in green space and trees, and a shorter commuter for many employees.  The 1950’s vintage warehouse at Washington and Canal Streets was retrofitted with additional insulation and roofing, energy-efficient windows, and environmental control systems.  The storm water system was re-designed to alleviate flooding of neighboring properties and streets.  Existing brickwork was integrated with new metal siding and trim.  Over 20 new trees were planted.  The building has become a model of selective re-use of blighted properties in the area.
